Help me give my students resources and supplies to have real world hands-on science experiences in our classroom. Students will explore the massive movements that are constantly shaping our Earth as they construct science models in our classroom.
My students are growing and learning in a small, tight knit, school community that allows them to each have a strong voice. They are dreamers, thinkers, talkers, and questioners. They are mini inspirations to themselves and others around them, even if they don't know it yet. They are world travelers, scientists, entrepreneurs, doctors, engineers, teachers... They are our future, and I want to give them the best start that I can to a successful life.
Many of my students have experienced trauma in their lives.
Our school serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. Vermont small schools are taking a hit when it comes to budgets. Our classroom budget has been reduced to less than $200. It is becoming harder and harder to purchase items for the classroom that would benefit the needs of all of the students.
Opportunities through DonorsChoose.org have the potential to make great things happen in my classroom. Thank you!
My Project
Science is taught daily to the fourth and fifth graders in my classroom. The Next Generation Science Standards include the content of exploring how the movements of the Earth are constantly changing the world around us. Using a hands-on approach to science engages students and allows them to actively participate in their learning. The resources and supplies in this kit will give students the chance to explore how rocks provide clues to the Earth's history and geological activity. Students will build cross-sections to compare ocean and continental crusts. They will model ocean-floor spreading, magma convection currents, volcanism, and earthquakes at plate boundaries. As a result students will learn to think of the Earth as constantly being refitted.
This kit will not only provide materials for hands on experiments but also literary elements to integrate into daily learning.
Students will also learn about Charles Richter using literary books provided in the kit. This will allow for integration of literacy and Social Studies during science. My students already show a tremendous amount of excitement when it comes to science. This kit will just allow for more resources to learn about our ever changing Earth.
