The second grade students in my classroom are a diverse group of learners that attend a small rural primary school in North Carolina.
Our school is in an economically disadvantaged area and most students live in poverty.
Our county qualifies for free breakfast and lunch for all students due to the limited resources available to our families. Our school is a Title I school.
One-third of the students in my classroom are English Language Learners. They are eager to learn, and I encourage them to show love and kindness to all every day. It is a challenge to teach children with limited English skills concepts that are abstract.
The demographic makeup of the students includes one-third of the students being black, one-third Hispanic, and one-third white. This group of children faces challenges daily including lack of supplies, limited access to healthcare, and food insecurity.
My Project
Children must be guided at a young age to treat all people with equality. I understand in order for students to internalize this concept they need to see what it looks like in real world applications. I would like to have two cameras and packages of instant film available for use by the students and myself in our classroom. The instant film will build excitement in every activity showcasing our diversity and tolerance.
I am requesting two instant photo cameras and film that will allow us to take photos that show the importance of respecting and appreciating diversity.
The students will have the opportunity to document learning activities that showcase their acceptance of their peers. The photos we will take will showcase the children participating in learning center activities with various peer groups. They will be guided in their ability and willingness to provide assistance to others when it is needed and to share materials. Many other students will also be able to view the photos the students have taken and will see that our classroom is learning about the special gifts we all have that make us unique. The children will also learn every person is also worthy of love, respect, and our friendship!
Our children have the ability to change the world!
