Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are the children of essential workers who have no access to libraries, yet alone great books. With our school in the center of Los Angeles, they were aware of the protest and unrest that happened just miles from them months ago, but they didn't understand the reasons why.
After parent conferences last week, I learned that it was impossible for them to have a learning environment from where they are situated right now.
My students don't get to see their parents until late at night and most are living with other families in a small room. My students get very little time learning about diversity from home.
My Project
Due to distance learning, my students get their reading only from digital books, that is if their wifi is working. Their parents do not have the time to read to them or even buy them books because they are busy working two jobs.
I would like to be able to teach my students topics that are impossible to learn like respecting differences, the importance of kindness, and gaining confidence in their own skin.
A third of the school year had been spent away from people that is supposed to help them connect socially during play at school. Instead, they have to sit for hours in front of the computer making thumbs up sign and pressing the unmute button.
