“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
-Albert Einstein (One of our greatest known minds-- though believed to have struggled with dyslexia, much like my students)
Most of my students are of average or above-average intelligence.
However, most of them struggle with various learning disabilities, most commonly in reading (which unfortunately generalizes to all subjects). Nevertheless, they are hard-working and dedicated, and determined to become employable citizens.
Many of my students have experienced discouraging academic situations. With reading delays, dyslexia, and lack of skill and fluency, they have lagged behind and most have lost any desire to read unless forced. This, of course, requires assistance, because the foundational literacy skills have not been set in place. Many students will not ask for assistance, because of embarrassment or shame. Others just don't want to read and fail!
My Project
Our class has recently been blessed with four Kindle Fires, thanks to the generosity of donors on Donors Choose! Seeing the excitement that has been instilled and the desire to read ignited is priceless.
My students use Kindle Fires to utilize Immersion Reading, a combination of Kindle book text and Audible audio narration that highlights while the text is read. Not only does this make fluent, modeled reading accessible independently, but it also allows the students to develop literacy with reinforcement of seeing the text with the audio.
The thought of all of my students being able to access this technology daily rather than rotating through "turns" for independent reading and reinforcement completely changes the accommodation table. This type of technology is exactly what my students need to keep up with the exponentially increasing standards of education.
This project would promote independent learning in a variety of settings.
The resources available with technology are incredible, and the research documenting literacy improvement gives a great hope for the academic and post-graduate success in employability. Developing the skills to advocate for self needs and accommodations are one of the critical components to the education of students with disabilities, and I hope to empower them in their independence and capabilities.
