Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Due to COVID-19, we are planning for reopening with some students opting for distance learning, but it is still up in the air at this time in Connecticut. Given recent events, with the Black Lives Matter movement and the recent incidents related to Asian Americans, I am revamping my curriculum to engage readers and promote the discourse for a better understanding of our similarities and differences while incorporating cultural representations of my Grade twelve students.

My school encompasses speakers of 29 languages with the predominant makeup of students being African American, Asian American, and Mexican American students.

I want the literature used in my instruction for grade twelve students to reflect the voices of my students, their cultures, and their conflicts and concerns. As an inner-city school, we have no money at this time for books.

I am including short stories and poetry that I have found that are accessible online; I am now seeking the books that will keep my students engaged in reading and learning whether they are in the classroom or distance learning.

My Project

Our students need texts that support current and relevant issues and concepts that will foster discourse in the online classroom in both verbal and written form. My students are in grade twelve; they are from multiple backgrounds (predominantly African American, Hispanic-American, and Asian American); they are not as interested in the old texts that focus on settings in the 1600s-1800s. They want contemporary literature that connects to who they are and where they are from as individuals in a multicultural community.

After speaking with my incoming students and listening to the valid points they made about having to only read classic texts from the literary canon, incorporating these texts ensures that the students will enjoy reading and discussing the texts.

These texts incorporate immigration, social justice, struggle, survival, problem-solving, and they are texts that are hard to put down because they have protagonists who are in the same age range as my students.
