My Students
“People tend to forget that the word ‘history’ contains the word ‘story’.” -Ken Burns -- That's what I want my students to understand, the history of the United States and the stories behind it. This trip is a great opportunity for my students to learn both.
I teach fifth grade in the state of Kentucky.
They are a mixture of advance program students, regular education students, and students with special needs. Several of my students are considered at risk, living in poverty. They are a terrific group of students with various backgrounds and from various neighborhoods around our community and each have much to offer our diverse classroom. This will be the first time that many of them have taken a trip like this and I want them to have the best experience they can. Having a portion of the trip paid for will be one less barrier to making this trip possible.
My Project
What would a tour of Gettysburg, PA and Washington, D.C. be without bus transportation and an experienced tour guide making our trip more memorable? A tour guide will give us information, insight, and interesting stories as well as connections in time, people, and places that will make our visit more meaningful. Learning about the history of our country by seeing the memorials, monuments and government buildings we read about every day, will be an invaluable experience for my students. It is vital for students to have a chance to view and explore historical locations. A tour guide and transportation enhances the trip for everyone involved. The guide's in-depth discussions and knowledge of the city amplify the trip for the students, as well as the parents. Their knowledge of the 'ins and outs' of the city eliminates wasted time and gets us to the various sights quickly. A tour guide will give our tour eye-opening experiences.
Having a tour guide 'guide' my students in Gettysburg, PA and around the city of Washington, D.C.
will enhance the tour and make it so much more memorable. Nothing can replace an experienced guide giving insight and historical background into all of memorials and museums that we visit. With your help paying for the tour guide and transportation, this will help bring the cost of the trip down and make taking this trip possible.
