My Project
Our school is a trauma-informed school, and COVID-19 has been especially tough on our families. Some families rely on our school for basic living needs, like providing meals and clothing, and providing our children with guidance and consistent love and support. Our school has since been working tirelessly to provide the needed guidance and support, and to rebuild a sense of belonging for all our students and ensuring all students' needs are being met. Every day, we are teaching our kids the importance of positive interaction, cooperation, how to problem solve, and how to consider the needs and feelings of others - not only of ourselves - and that they are very important PART of a WHOLE.
Throughout the year, our class has been following the theme of "How to mālama ourselves, so that we can better mālama our earth and community." I want my students to know that their ideas matter, and that they are a vital component to any community, especially OUR community.
Through this project, they will build a physical model of a community that will demonstrate their understanding of what we need to make the best community while also meeting the needs and overall health and well-being of the people living in that community. It will also reflect what they would like to see in our own community. Students will use collaboration and reflection to decide what will be included and ensures that EVERYONE in that community will feel healthy, safe, welcomed, and valued. This project will allow students to use their creativity and thinking skills to build a thriving community. It will create a sense of pride and care in what they build together and hopefully instill these values of pride and care into the communities they/their families live, work, and play in.
