My school is a small school with only one to two classes per grade level. Our middle school specifically is like a diverse family. Students come from all walks of life and various parts of the city. This year, I have the pleasure of teaching 6th grade students in general education and special education. This means I must plan for a wide range of needs and interests.
One way I am able to meet everyone's needs is by ensuring kids have the tools needed to work without me by their side.
It's important to me that students are able to work as a whole group, small group, and individually as they will be expected to do this throughout their careers.
My Project
My classroom can use your support specifically with small group and independent work. A small group set of "Lily and Dunkin" will allow multiple students to engage with this title during our social justice book clubs. This text features characters who are transgender and mentally ill. These two perspectives are important to hear from, but often not represented in books studied.
It is anticipated that students will want to explore other hidden voices on their own.
In order to be successful during independent reading, I have established a routine in which students track their reading rate for each text they read. This allows them to set a reasonable goal for completing texts. Students need a timer and calculator to complete this work. We unfortunately don't have enough for more than one student to calculate at a time. Providing these tools would allow students to set their goals more quickly and keep reading!
