I teach Kindergarten in a small rural West Virginia mining town. At this time our social studies and science curriculum is not up to Next Generation standards. I used the Lets Find Out magazine in my classroom last year. It goes with the Next Generation standards and gives a needed boost to our curriculum.
I love kindergarten.
My students come from a rural coal mining town in West Virginia. These children come from hard working blue collar mining families. This is a high poverty area right now do to the downward trend in the coal mines. My students are very inquisitive. The love science and social studies. I love to watch as they read about things that interest them. Last year's class called the Let's Find Out magazine their "newspaper".
My Project
The Scholastic "Lets Find Out" magazine offers many opportunities. The "newspaper" it self follows the Next Generation standards for social studies and science. It also pulls in math and ELA. This reaches all the children even the student that doesn't like to read or just can't read yet. It has wonderful colored pictures we use for whole group discussion. The teacher version also offers suggestions on how to use and expand on the lesson. Scholastic also offers free videos on line that you can access when you get a classroom subscription. I use these before I hand out their "newspapers" to get their interest peaked. This is an important tool to help my children learn about the world around us.
Receiving the donations to enable my students to receive "Let's Find Out " magazine, will help them join other children using Next Generation standards in our state and country.
Children at this age love social studies and science. "Let's Find Out" is a way to "feed" that enthusiasm! I hope by giving the students this opportunity they will develop a love of science and or history that will give them other options for employment besides the coal mines later in life. Please help me inspire my students.
