This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Computers are a very important throughout the day and in all subjects these days in education. My students are struggling along with me now that we have been laptop free for 2 weeks.

My students are 31 amazing and special kids.

They are in their final year at Denker and loving their year so far. Denker is a large elementary school of almost 900 students, most of which are on free or reduced lunch and are English Language Learners. I was a 4th grade teacher last year and had a such a wonderful and successful year that I chose to move with the kids to 5th grade. Spending two years with many of the same students has proven to be beyond wonderful.

My Project

About 8 or 9 years ago I was lucky enough to receive a grant from the district for an ELMO, projector, and a Mac laptop. The ELMO and projector are still getting used everyday and have improved my ability to deliver instruction in unmeasurable ways, but sadly the laptop recently died. I rushed the laptop to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store and was told that the hard drive and battery both needed to be replaced, and that a new hard drive in such an old computer is not recommended, plus I couldn't afford it! I cannot begin to tell you how important it is to have a laptop. I have a desktop that still works, but it is not an effective teaching tool. The laptop can sit on my desk plugged into the speakers and the projector at all times. This allows me to teach students how to use the internet and word processing programs correctly. I am able to download thematic music and books to listen to. Students will use it for projects in small groups as well.

I know that this is a rather expensive request, but please know that the old laptop was used by myself and my students every single day and having it replaced would be wonderful!

We would be so thankful to get back to work digitally!
