Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third graders at Brentwood Academy in East Palo Alto, California love life science! They've started the year studying the variety of life, the definition of life, and the life cycle. As part of our learning they are examining preserved animal specimens, related literature, Eyewitness videos, and live animals in aquariums. While they are growing intellectually as scientists, they are becoming eager to use their knowledge in an authentic scientific way. Specifically, they would like the opportunity to work with their knowledge to investigate and experiment life in a real world setting. Field trips to museums or local university labs are typically a great way to get involved in our community this way, but we are limited to one outing this school year, and it is predetermined. Therefore, the students want to bring the field trip and scientists to our classroom.
The San Francisco Zoo provides just such an opportunity. It offers the ZooMobile Program with classes such as Animal Classification, The Food Web, The Evolving Reptiles, and How Animals Grow which come out to and take place in classrooms around the San Francisco Bay area. In these sessions students meet live animals, apply their life science knowledge to environmental protection plans, and explore the inter-dependence of plants and animals including themselves.
My students and I hope you can help us become real scientists as we continue to explore life science. You have the opportunity to inspire a future world of environmentally thoughtful scientists who otherwise might remain in only the memory of video and book life. Thank you for any support you can give us!
