This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At the beginning of every school year, I read my students the book Our Class is a Family and A Letter from Your Teacher: On the First Day of School both by Shannon Olsen, to encourage a family/community feel within our classroom. In addition, our school is supported by Capturing Kids Hearts to help foster social-emotional well-being, a relationship-driven school/classroom environment, and student connectedness, which promotes so many positive aspects of our school/classroom community and student learning/achievement. Each classroom at our school has a "social contract," similar to that of classroom rules, which is student-driven with positive wording/affirmations, which we review daily. "We are a Family" is written on our classroom social contract with a picture of the book.

Our classroom motto is: "We are a Family," and I would love to gift each of my students a copy of the book A Letter from Your Teacher: On the Last Day of School as a keepsake/reminder of their 3rd grade school year and classroom family.

We are a Title I school, and most of our students are low-income and/or English Language Learners (including newcomers to the country). Purchasing books for families can be a challenge with all the other things they have to provide. This means that the engagement of reading for most students comes during the day at school. I allow students to take home books and return them back from my personal classroom library, and like most teachers, I come out-of-pocket to provide book gifts for my students to keep at home 3-4 times a school year. I would love for this book to be a part of their book collection at home.
