This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Many of our students are strong and resilient, having already faced complex histories of poverty, trauma, loss, mental health challenges, and the like. They still sometimes need a safe and comforting space to gather their thoughts, better understand their feelings, strengthen their problem-solving and conflict-resolution abilities, or consider the best approaches toward academic and career pathways.

Affording students a more welcoming “home-like” environment gives them a chance to escape the institutional feel of the public school setting.

Having things like a classroom rug, a welcoming theme, and new books will help them feel respected and supported, as well as encourage them to relax. They will more readily approach their troubles/distractions, gain insight, and be more attentive and receptive as they work toward a brighter future.

Further enhancing our classroom to integrate psychoeducational materials into the décore helps underscore many of the key concepts and approaches utilized regularly with our students.

Mrs. Putnam will only receive her materials if this project is fully funded by June 2.
