This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are creative scholars that aspire to go into the field of art or engineering. They belong to pathways, or academies, with classes that focus on the arts, architecture, manufacturing, construction, and engineering. Like many teenagers, they take their math classes for a grade and because they are required, but don’t often see the real-life applications or are given the opportunity to express their creativity.
The materials on this list will make learning engaging and meaningful by providing students the chance to apply their creativity and mathematical skills in some hands-on learning activities.
The materials on the list are to explore some of the projects that can be created with the machine and to provide the opportunity to create keepsakes. Having these tools and materials can allow for interdisciplinary projects between their math class, their Career Technical Education courses, and art. The gift cards will be used as rewards and incentives that students can earn and be able to purchase items of their choice to personalize with the Cricut.
Math is all around us and I hope that by creating tangible items, students will see the relevance of math while having fun with their creations. The cricut provides endless possibilities for students to create items from making their own spirit gear, such as shirts and personalized water bottles to creating posters, stickers, cosmetic bags, key chains, 3D models for class projects etc. To create any of these items, students will need to use mathematical concepts such as measurement, proportions, ratios, percentages, symmetry, temperature, lines, etc. If students choose to create products to fundraise, students will use the principles of linear programming to learn to maximize profit. These are all real-life applications of the math concepts that they are learning in class.
