Our Class Pet Got Too Big!

My Project

I try to keep nature visible in my science classroom. I've got live plants lining the walls, a shrimp colony, a hissing cockroach colony, and a ball python. My students love the class python, Banana, who was provided to us several years ago through a Pets in the Classroom grant. They help clean his cage, they help feed him, and it's common to see him wrapped around the forearm of a kid taking notes or working on a project. Watching kids who come to my room horrified of snakes, leave for the summer wanting to get a pet snake of their own, is a surprisingly common occurrence.

Banana is growing, and his current enclosure is quickly becoming too small.

I want my students to see a snake that's properly cared for, especially the ones that play with the idea of getting their own pet snake. Part of that proper care is a tank that is the proper size, and Banana will soon not be in a tank of the proper size.
