My project needs 6 copies each of the books Lucy Rose: Busy Like You Can't Believe, The Spoon in the Bathroom Wall, and Ellie McDoodle: Have Pen, Will Travel.
I am a teacher in a title one public school in New York City. Our reading curriculum has allowed my students to choose their own just right chapter books to read during our independent reading time. I have been noticing that many of my students have started reading the same books. They have gone to the school library, the local library and even borrowed books from other fourth grade teachers so that three or four of them can all read the same book at the same time. Lunch time has become discussion time. The students are talking about the characters, setting, and plot of their books.
I feel that with my students' enthusiasm for reading and wanting to share their reading experiences with one another I want to introduce my students to Literature Circles. A Literature Circle is a student centered reading activity for a group of 4-6 students at any grade level. Each member of a circle is assigned a role which helps guide the group in a discussion of the book they are all reading. Literature Circles provide an opportunity for students to control their own learning; to share thoughts, concerns and their understanding of the events of the novel.
I am looking for sets of 6 chapter books for my fourth grade students. These books will not only be used by my students this year but by my students in years to come. The books that I have chosen are Lucy Rose: Busy Like You Can't Believe, written by Katy Kelly; The Spoon in the Bathroom Wall, written by Tony Johnston; and Ellie McDoodle: Have Pen, Will Travel, written by Ruth McNally Barshaw, are books that I know students will enjoy not only right now but for years to come.
