Help me give my students a sensory calming corner that will support emotional regulation, reduce stress and anxiety, enhance focus and attention, promote sensory exploration, teach self-regulation skills, and create an inclusive learning environment.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
I believe that implementing a space that greatly benefits all of our scholars, regardless of their individual needs or abilities. My request is to build a sensory calming corner to help enhance scholar learning and to provide a designated area where students can practice self-regulation skills, manage their emotions effectively, and find a sense of calm and relaxation and while utilizing items that can be reused.
By creating a safe and calming environment, I aim to reduce stress and anxiety levels among my scholars, ultimately improving their focus, attention, and overall well-being and teaching scholars the importance to learn to value the resources that the environment provide and to take responsibility for preserving them.
To ensure inclusivity and accessibility, it is important to consider the diverse needs and abilities of my scholars where I asked students and then selected materials and activities for our calming corner. Additionally, personalizing the corner allows students to produce artwork related to preserving our environment, read books related to nature and environment, listen to Bio Music/Eco Instrumental Music, have a snack, take photographs, or create meaningful objects that create a sense of ownership and comfort.
I envision the sensory calming corner to include wheeled storage bin, flexible seating, snacks, a variety of sensory materials and tools, such as tactile objects, visual stimuli, calming nature music using the blue tooth system, and relaxation tools like fidget toys. These elements will allow scholars to engage their senses, explore sensory play, and develop self-regulation strategies.
