My students need bookshelves to house their science journals. Our classroom has metal shelving, but the shelves have been damaged and removed due to years of use. We are using milk crates as makeshift shelves!

My Students
My students are learning what scientists look like. They enjoy the hands-on aspects of the science classroom, and need to practice making good observations and writing them down. We use journals in the science classroom to help students organize their thoughts, practice writing fluency, and instill confidence in their thinking and writing. I want them to know that not only do good scientists "do" things, but they also have to report what they know.
My students come to school with a variety of scientific experiences; some have had the opportunity to take classes at the city's science centers and museums; some have only explored in their neighborhoods and back yards.
Providing them with meaningful science activities, giving them opportunities to write about their experiences in a meaningful way, and modeling how to be organized will help to prepare them for advanced scientific study.
My Project
Organization is key in a science classroom where approximately 150 students come and go every day. Each of my third and fourth grade students has a science journal, and they need to be able to enter the classroom and find their journal in a matter of minutes so that we can begin our bell work without sacrificing learning time.
Having bookshelves that are organized will help my students find their science journals in the same place every day.
I want them to know that everyone's belongings have a home and are valued. Doing this will continue to promote a sense of community in my classroom.
