My Students
I am the librarian at a small public school which is nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. My school has 150 students of many diverse and unique backgrounds. We are a Title I school with a poverty rate of 97%. Almost 15% of our students are homeless. Numerous families receive weekend food assistance in their child's backpack from our local food bank.
Many of my students are reluctant readers and academic success does not come easily or quickly.
In our school, we strive to create warm, safe and welcoming classrooms while maintaining a fun, creative learning atmosphere.
My Project
The emergency room at our book hospital is in a critical state. Please help us get the materials to treat and care for our library books so they can make a full recovery!
For many of my students, the only library they will ever visit is the school library.
Library materials, such as books and magazines, are used frequently among my 200 students and staff. My students know if their book is damaged or a page torn, to put it in the book hospital for critical care treatment. I am requesting materials that will help us repair and extend the life of our precious books. Tape will be used to repair loose book spines and mend torn pages. Labels will be used to cover the spine label and the barcode on the books. Bookmarks will keep pages from being bent and becoming worn. With shrinking school budgets, often supplies for the media center are a low priority when pencils and paper are needed.
Without a budget to obtain basic library supplies, many of our media center's book are falling into disrepair. Ultimately, this leads to less selection and quality of books from which my students can choose. Please help us keep our books happy and healthy!
