My students need a large area rug to sit on during whole group learning times and modular seating to move around the room while finding the perfect spot to work!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Our school is home to students from over 14 different countries, speaking multiple different languages. Our school is 100% free and reduced price lunch. Many of my students come from very low income housing without home support.
Most of my students are entering my classroom needing a warm, inviting, and flexible space to learn in.
First grade is so important for students to really begin their lifelong learning journey. Having a classroom setup to meet the needs of all my students is an extremely high priority of mine.
My Project
Our classroom is in need of a rug that is big enough to fit all of us comfortably for whole group learning. Currently our classroom rug only fits about 15 kids, which leaves 5-10 sitting on the linoleum floor. We spend around 2.5 hours (combined) learning together on the carpet. As first graders we spend a lot of time moving around the classroom, trying to find the best spot to learn. We are learning about how to choose our own environment for optimal learning. Having modular seating choices, like the ottomans and stools in my project, will allow my students the ability to try out different places in our classroom to find what works best for them.
