Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At our school, a Title I school in East Oakland, we are passionate about student inclusion and belonging. We believe that every student deserves to see themselves reflected in the books and stories that are shared in their classroom. Studies have shown that creating a personal connection to books and allowing students to choose what they read increases student engagement and creates positive feelings about reading. We built an explicit SEL curriculum for our school around the 5 CASEL competencies: Self-Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible decision-making, and chose books that both reflect our students’ cultural heritages as well as introduce them to new ideas and points of view, such as the experiences of refugees or gender identity. The lessons also address the discrepancy between feelings of student belonging in our school's black and Pacific-Islander students compared to the wider student body. They are differentiated based on grade band and are supported by read-alouds around key topics.

Emotion and cognition are intricately intertwined, and socio-emotional learning about a growth mindset can increase student persistence, self-efficacy beliefs, and ultimately academic achievement.

Lesson 2 focuses on self-awareness and is supported by read-alouds of the books, The Magical Yet by Angela DiTerlizzi and Your Fantastic Elastic Brain: A Growth Mindset Book for Kids to Stretch and Shape Their Brains by JoAnn Deak Ph.D. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand how the brain develops, distinguish between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset, and recognize the emotional signals that might indicate whether they’re operating from a growth mindset or a fixed mindset.

We thank you for your support and for believing that students in our school deserve access to quality literature that both reflects and broadens their experiences.
