Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in inner-city neighborhoods, known for gang violence and drug activity. These are really hard neighborhoods to grow up in, much less be able to focus on getting an education. But, my students have made a commitment to their future and are determined to become the first in their families to go to college. They attend a 6-12 grade secondary charter school on a University of California campus.
Our school’s mission is to prepare low-income, first-generation, highly motivated students to enter a four-year college or university upon graduation.
Our students attend an extended school day and year and take eight classes a semester with a rigorous single-track college preparatory curriculum. The student body is ethnically diverse and lives throughout the county, representing over 40 different zip codes. Students ride multiple modes of transportation to commute to our small school. I'm proud to serve 818 students this year.
My Project
Our school will be hosting our 1st Annual College Signing Day on May 1, 2018. We are a grade 6-12 school, so the majority of our seniors have been together for seven years and are coming towards the end of their journey towards college admission and enrollment. During this event, our senior students will announce to the community their intent to attend the college of their choice. We will have all 95 seniors and their teachers in attendance at the event. We will also be planning a prep rally during high school lunch so that the rest of the student body can celebrate our seniors going to college. In June, we will have our annual senior awards ceremony where each senior is recognized for their scholarships and financial aid awarded by their college. These events offer a unique opportunity to celebrate graduating seniors, showcase our student achievement and inspire more first generation youth to take the first steps on their journey to higher education.
By funding this project, you will enable us to make the day unforgettable for our seniors and celebrate their hard work throughout their past seven years at our school.
We have included items to use for decorations, a photo booth, and gift cards to purchase food for the event. I can't wait to see how surprised our students will be when they walk into our decorated gym (with music playing, photo booth set up, and food catered) and learn that the celebration is for them!
