My Students

I teach a group of diverse and exceptional learners this year. My students include Deaf and multiply disabled, elementary students grades K-2. They are all Deaf or Hard of Hearing and have additional disabilities including Deaf-Blindness, orthopedic and physical disabilities, Autism, and other developmental delays. They receive bilingual instruction in American Sign Language (ASL) and English. I also teach and communicate with my students tactilely through touch and physical objects and symbol systems. My students come to school with smiles on their faces, full of questions, and ready to learn. Each day they inspire me and everyone they meet!

I am lucky to be their teacher and I strive to inspire them with new activities and experiences every day.

These students love to inquire, learn from their friends, and learn in the most comfortable environment while accessing language and instruction. In order for students to have their needs met and be successful, the curriculum needs to be adapted individually for each student. This is done through the use of hands-on activities, real world experiences, technology, and individualized instruction. They are an incredible group and each year I consider myself lucky to have the opportunity to watch them grow.

My Project

Students with special needs, vision loss, and physical disabilities face a challenge in our increasingly digital world. Students who are blind or have limited use of their hands struggle to access and navigate digital screens such as tablets. My students benefit from real life objects to learn and access instruction and activities. However many popular games, videos, and activities are inaccessible to them.

Osmo is a ground breaking gaming program that changes all of that by bridging the gap between the real world and the digital world!

Osmo syncs an iPad and its apps with what the student physically does in the physical space in front of it. This allows students with a variety of needs to access digital programs and games!

Students will use number and letter tiles, shapes, and markers that sync with the learning games to problem solve and have fun! My students will use this program to work on skills such as drawing, literacy, physics puzzles, spatial reasoning, coding, and more! They will be motivated to work and have fun while completing a variety of challenges promoting higher level thinking!
