My students are in a self-contained classroom for students with Autism. The students in my classroom are mostly nonverbal; however, they communicate their wants and needs to us through pictures or sign language.
We are building our students' confidence and skill set so that they are ready and comfortable to attend class with their same age peers.
Our classroom is a family that includes students, teachers, parents and community members. Our goal for our students is to increase independence and build their knowledge so they can contribute to their community.
These students are hard workers and extremely intelligent. They just have a different way of expressing themselves and learning.
My Project
Osmo is a learner-led iPad game system that uses physical objects and learning tools in conjunction with an iPad. Teachers love Osmo’s versatility in the classroom and the way it fosters student learning in key areas social-emotional, creative thinking, STEM, and Common Core areas.
Osmo provides special education students with the opportunity to integrate technology with actual physical objects that they can feel and manipulate.
The different games allow them to learn crucial problem solving skills that can directly help them develop marketable skills to help with their futures and make them employable.
Many of my students struggle with handwriting, and practice with tracing in workbooks is a chore and a bore for them. They love to increase their tracing skills using Osmo as the activities are fun and meaningful to them.
Osmo is a program you have to see to believe. My students have a chance to reach their academic potential with this amazing technology in a way that direct teaching just doesn't do for them with their unique learning differences.
