I need a training class to learn how to teach the Orton-Gillingham's essential five components to literacy and the tools necessary to apply it in the classroom.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am blessed to teach an amazing group of moderate/severe special education high school students. Our school is a Title I school serving a diverse population. The students I work with are determined and strive to persevere through social, emotional, and academic challenges. My Community-Based Instruction (CBI) class has worked with peers on the yearbook staff, attended school activities, and volunteered in the community. They excel with movement and hands-on experiences. I am blessed to be their teacher, and I strive to encourage students beyond their greatest expectations.
In order to continually encourage my students in their reading fluency, I would like to learn the Orton-Gillingham method.
After participating in this accredited Structured Literacy course, I will understand the structure and foundation of the English language as well as the research behind the science of reading. I will have a basic knowledge of how to assess and teach students in all three tiers of RTI as well as students with dyslexia. I will be able to evaluate and teach students in phonological skills, phonics/word recognition, spelling, writing, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. These added skills will benefit my students, helping them to prosper in high school and throughout their vocational and personal journeys. Thank you for trusting me and believing in my students.
