Origami Geometry in First Grade

My Students

Dodecahedrons, prisms, and pyramids, oh my! I can't wait to see the origami shapes my first graders will soon be creating.

I teach a first grade gifted and talented class at a high poverty school in New York City.

It is a class of 24 children, all with extremely diverse needs. They are some amazing thinkers who have a love for learning. They learn best through hands-on activities that are related to their own personal interests.

My Project

I spent my summer learning inspiring ways to teach gifted and talented children. One idea that I can't wait to try with my first graders is geometry through origami! Origami paper is very expensive however, so I haven't been able to try it yet with the limited paper that we have available at school. As someone who had never done origami before this summer, I was amazed at the complex geometric shapes that I was able to create. So many higher level math concepts are involved with origami. My first graders would have an up-close look at angles, symmetry, and parallel lines. I am sure that my class will take-off with their creations and their learning as soon as they have the resources to try it out.

My class needs origami paper to begin making creations that will motivate them to take their math to a whole new level!

It will be amazing to see the patience and concentration that my students will show as they are learning math through such a fun, hands-on activity.
