This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a small inner-city public school, in Chicago. Our population is made up of 100% lower-income families. Our needs always surpass our resources for students. Teachers and parents have the same goals for the students: we all want a safe, respectful, and challenging learning environment that enables all students to become productive and successful.
My school receives very little outside funding, in which teachers are constantly supplying daily materials and any extras on their own.
I teach K-3rd special education in which each of my students has different needs to meet daily. It could be anything from sensory to learning. I have to modify everyday learning to meet each of the children's learning needs within my classroom.
My Project
My project is for materials for my classroom to help my special needs students be more organized within the classroom. Right now, my students are lacking organization in our room, which is something that is extremely important for children who have special needs. They need things to be in the same place at all times, in order to function within the classroom. The bookshelves will help them to locate hands-on materials in a more efficient and quickly manner. The pull-out drawers will be labeled, and the children will be able to find blank paper and lined paper on their own. Each child will also have a drawer with their name that has their daily work. This will promote independence for my special needs children that they need for the general education classroom.
