My Students

Students who attend Winbourne Elementary have the potentials and a desire to learn, but often have uphill battles they must overcome with regards to the community in which they live. Many of them live in households where attending school merely lacks the support needed.

Much of the hindrances for them excelling in school are because of detrimental circumstances beyond their control.

At school tends to be a safe haven for them to receive much needed support. needed I can only imagine the ways of understanding how my students manifest the pain and trauma that they and their families have experienced for generations. I continuously need a means for helping them recognize their brilliance in the midst of all this, for nurturing that brilliance, and for pursuing meaningful goals that acknowledged their challenges.

My Project

Unfortunately for my students situation, seldom it is often not assumed that organization skills will be taught at home with other life skills. A student can, with a visual reminder, put school materials in a designated place. Perhaps students hear “you need to be organized” but don’t actually know what this means or what it looks like. I talk to students about how being organized is important and it can actually make their lives less complicated. Teaching students organizational skills is an important part of our job as teachers. I work at providing a structured classroom environment.
