Since students must be able to count and subdivide rhythms in their head in order to play them on the drums, I will teach them how to read music notation to help them with patterns and various math concepts. Students will be allowed to take a pair of drumsticks home overnight to practice the rhythms to be able to perform on the instruments. Students report at a scheduled time for music class to engage in a session of learning various drum cadences for which they will perform from memory. They will perform for the student body: for example, at a school-wide pep rally or Mardi Gras parade as these events have been held previously in the school's parking lot.
