My Students
My school is for at-risk kids. We are located in Milwaukee, an urban area, and are open to students who meet the "at-risk" criteria. Our students are considered at-risk of not graduating high school for a wide variety of reasons. Many have tried traditional high schools in the inner city previously and have been unsuccessful there. A majority of my students are living in poverty and dealing with the many issues that stem from that. Often they don’t speak English as their first language, have suffered severe losses, including losing their parents or caretakers, or they have children of their own. They are the kindest, funniest people you could ever meet, and their behavior mirrors their need to survive their particular situations.
Every day our students are willing to put aside their differences, whether they are cognitive, socioeconomic, racial, or gang-based, in order to gain their education.
Our school is an alternative one specifically designed for students who are deficient in credits, academic skills, an understanding of behavioral norms, and emotional support.
My Project
I am working very hard to improve our classroom library. Right now it is a hodge-podge of books I've been given or found left behind. I want to be able to offer students more options for silent reading, and new resources they could use for projects and extra credit. I would like to have books that have been chosen for them, not just books that someone else didn't want. My students aren't crazy about reading, but with these new books, they might just get more excited about it.
Our classroom library is very much in need of improvement.
These book selections, supplies(pencils and pens), and organization materials(cubicles) will not only improve our library but the literacy of my students as well. I cannot wait to share these new titles with my students.
