My 2nd grade students are young, eager learners. They enter the room ready to participate in active learning. We start each day with a journal activity so I have the opportunity to learn more about each of my students.
The students in my school come with many barriers in their way of learning.
We have over 85% of students living in poverty. Often they are exposed to environments that don't provide them with the socially acceptable ways to interact with others. So not only do they need taught core academics, they also need to learn how to navigate through the school in appropriate ways. They are capable of learning, but they often haven't had the early childhood interactions that help learning come easily. Our students are the hardest working kids I know!
My Project
Our students often come to us with poor social skills and organizational skills. I chose to ask for chair pockets to help my students learn how to organize and keep track of their materials. They change classes for reading and have to sit at another student's desk. I would like for my students to gain a sense of ownership at that desk. They aren't able to store anything in because it belongs to someone else. The chair pockets will provide students with a place of their own!
My students often lose materials because they aren't able to keep things organized while changing classes.
Often they need to restart activities or projects because they can't find their things. These chair pockets will help students keep their things all in one place. It will give us a chance to keep learning instead of always looking for things!
