Organizing for AVID Success

My Students

Teachers are not the only ones who get excited about new school supplies. My students are often just as excited as I am by the smell of a freshly-sharpened pencil, the smooth feel of a clean sheet of notebook paper, or the bright streak of a colorful highlighter moving across a line of text.

I have a group of wonderful, hardworking students who, despite the struggling economy, look enthusiastically toward their future.

They are eager to learn and acquire the skills they will need to be competitive in the 21st century. Common Core literacy standards support the idea that the two most important skills students will need to be successful in the future are reading and writing. My class sizes are large, about 35-40, and our school has very limited resources, even for the most basic supplies like paper and pencils. Because of this, I often use my own money to supply my students with many of the school supplies they need to be successful throughout the year.

My Project

The year is not yet over and for some of my AVID students, their binders are falling apart! This is disheartening because these are hardworking students for whom school is a priority and college a goal they are working towards daily.

In AVID, organization is key and using and maintaining their binder is a big part of that.

The binders the students currently have were not the durable type and are already falling apart. New binders would make my students so happy and reinvigorate their academic motivation. These are wonderful students with bright futures who deserve to have a binder capable of keeping up with them!
