My Project

My current students are a wonderful group from whom I have learned many things. After decades of teaching, these seventeen first graders are the youngest I've ever taught. In finding my way through this first year, I have learned much about the needs of our littlest learners. One important thing I have found is that you can never be too organized or too individualized. The most effective lessons I have taught this year have been those where I was able to create a continuum of work geared specifically to the sequence of the curriculum while adding in what my specific group needs to move from one step to the next. Likewise, my most successful teaching has come from when I have made individualized tweaks based on the needs of each child.

In searching for a better way to provide these kinds of activities, I keep coming back to these wonderful new binding machines.

With spiral binders, teachers can create booklets for any subject matter with complete differentiation. While one child may open to an activity drilling the basic level of skill, his neighbor may have a second or even third page that takes the original skill and then digs deeper into the matter. Science journals can be prepared with each lesson in sequence and geared to the exact objective without cutting, pasting, or looking different. Booklets can be made for various level readers that appear similar and yet the language or readability can be differentiated while maintaining similarity across the group. Children requiring more space on a page or more organization with writing grids or models can have that in their personalized booklet that looks for all other reasons identical to their neighbor. One final use for these amazing machines would be as a publishing method in the writers' workshop.
