My Students

My keen Kindergartener’s take great pleasure in learning; having an organized library system within the classroom is essential in their learning process. Using a color coded system makes it quick and easy for my students to find their appropriate level text.

My students are full of life and energy and are always excited to learn.

They come from a disadvantage school on the Windward side of Oahu. Our school is located in a predominately rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Micronesian ancestry. I have a very diverse class of 20 students with different cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds. They are motivated young students who struggle with literacy due to the lack of accessible tools.

My Project

An organized library makes for a very well utilized library. After students are assessed to determine their reading levels, having the requested color coded bins will make it easier for my Keen Kindergartners to easily find text that are their appropriate reading level. Each student will also have their own book box as well. These boxes contain books at the students' specific level. As the students' reading levels progress over the year, they can trade books out by easily locating the matching color and letter box. An iPad will also come in quite handy. It has applications that can scan, check out, and keep track of all books in the library.

Having an organized library creates a great positive atmosphere within the classrooms learning environment.

Students, who are able to find books at their reading level quickly and easily, spend more time reading and increasing their literacy skills.
