Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is a 4th and 5th grade GATE (Gifted and Talented). Many students in my classroom have parents that are working multiple jobs to keep up with living expenses. Our school is also considered to be a neighborhood school, meaning that most students walk to and from school and have very little experience outside of their neighborhood.
Students in my classroom often come to school with a lack in background information on topics.
Many have limited availability to books and access to print resources. Our school is becoming a STEM school next year, and as part of our new design, I would like to make my classroom print rich. This means I would like to make the books I have more easily accessible to my classroom of students and to future students in my class. I would like to provide bookshelves in my classrooms where students can easily organize books, and more efficiently find books they need as they are learning. In gifted classrooms, students tend to be a bit more disorganized. Having bookshelves will allow our resources to be organized and will set up a model for how important organization is for learning.
My Project
The bookshelves will have an impact on student learning in my classroom for years to come. Bookshelves will help my students to keep our classroom organized and our books to be well taken care of.
In addition, these shelves will allow us to have more books in our classroom that will in turn help students to learn about topics of interest and about the topics we study throughout the year.
Books help to engage learners and increase interest in topics. Having space and a place to put books in our classroom will help to keep my students engaged and loving learning and reading for years to come.
