This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a Title I middle school located in North Las Vegas, NV. All of the students at this school receive free or reduced-price lunch. My average class size is between 35-40 students. My students are from a low-income, or an under-served area. They strive to work against this adversity. The background that my students have requires a warm learning environment to counteract any negative they may face. They work well in hands-on settings involving lots of group work. My students are not on grade level and this year will be spent helping them get to that level.
My Project
I teach English Language Arts to middle school students in Las Vegas. This year there is a lot of focus on paper based writing instruction. My students need help focusing their writing and all of these supplies will help them do that.
Organization is one of the key elements in all of the writing standards for ELA in 8th grade.
For example, W.8.2 is the current standard we are working on in class, and it asks students to write an organized explanatory essay. Having the highlighters will help them highlight each part of their writing.
The erasable sheet protectors will allow students to work with essay models of other students and ones that I create. In groups they will be able to write on these models and make changes. These lessons will help them improve their personal writing skills and knowledge.
