Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom is loud, energetic, and fast-paced. I teach three different band courses, two vocal music courses, and one piano course. My students work extremely hard to come together and develop their skills as musicians, both as soloists and as part of an ensemble.

My school is situated in the middle of a struggling community.

Our population is largely Hispanic, and many of our students are English Language Learners. The students at my school view many of our school organizations as a second family and support system. My music students are hardworking, funny, and passionate. They support one another and work well together. One of the things I am most proud of my students for is the way they encourage one another as well as hold each other accountable for their actions. They all understand that our band and choir ensembles are teams and that each person plays a vital role in the successful operation of the ensemble.

My Project

My classroom did not come with much in the way of shelving or cabinets. We currently store our musical instruments in a small room next to the band room. The instruments are stacked on the floor or crowded on one single plastic shelving unit that is not very sturdy. All of this results in instruments regularly falling to the floor and getting damaged. These shelving units will provide us with a way to safely store and organize our instruments in the storage room. The materials we are requesting will keep them protected and usable for many years to come.

My students take pride in what they do.

They are proud to be a part of my organizations and work hard to succeed. This is just one more step in encouraging my students to continue to work hard. An organized and efficient instrument storage room will keep the classroom running smoothly. These materials will improve the classroom environment, thereby giving my students even more to be proud of.
