Every week, my students attend library class to engage with literature, research, and technology. I strive to make the library a place where students can build a love of reading, learning, and exploring the world around them.
Our library is not a place where children are shushed and told to be quiet at all times.
My students use every inch of the library - from the tables to the computers to the bookshelves to the carpet. They have fun, learn, collaborate, and explore with books, websites, games, and more! This large, light-filled space is just the place for young brains to grow.
My Project
These items will be used to organize the library and make sure students can quickly and efficiently find what they need. The sign holders and mailing boxes will be used to denote various sections of the library shelves, making it easier for students to get the exact book they're looking for. Visual indicators are vital to the success of ELL students , too. The book ends will help us keep our books from falling over as the students browse.
Since our building is brand new, there are no tried and true organizational methods yet.
Once the kids get the hang of finding the books they need, they'll also need to know how to go to the right places inside of this large space. Sit spots help the kids to know where to stand when checking out and lining up. The doorbells help the students (and me) keep track of when it is time to do various activities and ask for help, while also keeping things fun and lighthearted.
All of these tools, from signage to classroom management devices, will help us in every single class. We will use these things to turn our library from a large, light-filled space filled with books into an organized, efficiently-run space where everything can be found easily. Instead of spending brain power trying to find materials, they can spend their time and energy using those materials for learning!
