This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children with autism often have difficulty with receptive and expressive language, sequential memory, and handling changes in their environment. The TEACCH method provides the individual with structure and organization.

As a teacher of students with autism, I need to find ways to reach my students.

With 6 students in my class, that usually means 6 different ways to teach the same concept. My six middle school students with autism face many daily challenges, none of us could ever imagine. They attend a specialized school in a high poverty neighborhood in NYC. My class is specifically designed to meet the sensory, learning, and medical needs of students with autism that cannot be met in a traditional classroom. They all have limited social skills as well as significant language deficits in both expressive and receptive language. The majority are nonverbal and communicate by alternate modes.

My Project

One of the methods I use to teach my students is called TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic Children with Communication Handicaps). The primary focus of TEACCH is to increase independence, fluency and generalization of skills. Through TEACCH I am hoping to provide structure and organization in my classroom. This will help to ease behavior problems and resistance to learn new things. The materials I am requesting will help me to set up tasks that the children will be able to complete independently based on their cognitive levels. The velcro and laminating paper will be used to create independent work materials. The baskets and bins will hold each task so that it organized for easy manipulation by the students. When the students know what is expected of them it helps to decrease their stress levels and this can help to avoid behavioral outbursts. These materials will help me to set up a classroom which provides structure, organization and independence.

By supporting this project you will helping me to create an environment that is structured and organized so that my students can become more independent learners in the classroom setting that they need to be successful.
