This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach in an urban school district, our school is 5th and 6th grade only with about 530 students. Currently, I have 30 students enrolled in 3 of my Mathematics Classes. That's 90 students that I teach, everyday! My students come from all backgrounds, some have deep roots in the community, while others are first generation U.S. born or just arrived in the country. Most of my students have parents that work two to three jobs just to make ends meet. Therefore, school supplies, or money to spend on school supplies, is scarce.
My school is a Title I school with about 85% of students who receive free/reduced lunch.
Having the materials they need to support their learning would be a great help to them.
However, even with these difficulties, all of my students have a passion for learning. Each day, they come in and they are excited to learn new things. Their excitement, makes me excited just to be in the same room as they are!!! As a teacher, this makes me super happy and proud to have them in my room, because each day really counts for them.
We have very limited storage space in our classroom and are constantly stacking our materials on top of each other which makes it hard at times to access what we need. Therefore, we are requesting a lockable storage cabinet. This cabinet will help keep our essential materials neat, organized and most importantly easily accessible.
A storage cabinet is beneficial because it allows the students to easily find what they need to keep learning.
The storage cabinet will be used to store student supplies (such as pens, pencils, notebooks, rulers, protractors, graph paper, etc.), mathematical manipulative (such as rods, cubes, volume containers, fraction bars, fraction circles, etc) as well as storing incomplete projects to keep them safe.
This cabinet will be a tremendous help in organizing the room and making the most of our time in the classroom.
