Help me give my students the tools needed to keep their homework and schoolwork organized so they can learn greater skills to help them be more organized in life.
My students live in the rural, volcanic side of Hawaii's "Big Island." The students come from a variety of backgrounds including but not limited to Native Hawaiian, Filipino, Hispanic, Asian, and Pacific Islander. Because of the isolation of our island, many have never traveled to a city, many have never left the island or the state of Hawaii. Parents and grandparents work in agriculture, ranching, fishing, the sciences, the tourism industry, education, food services, and more.
My students come to school for so much more than learning; it is a place they feel safe, loved, and cared for.
Our classroom is an inclusion classroom, which means we accommodate children with specialized learning plans, striving to never isolate kids into separate spaces. Although each child varies greatly in academics, they all love to be at school. They are so fun, and eager to see what each day will bring for them. I feel so blessed to be able to be a part of such a great group of kids!
My Project
Homework is always a mess for most of my students. Their planners get lost or torn, and the same thing happens to their homework folders. Students often do not have pencils or tools to use at home. It is my desire to provide them with the opportunity to stay organized in order to help them become better students. With the sheet protectors, I will make 100's charts for each of them, as well as a sight words sheet to practice regularly.
Many of my students do not have homework folders and just push their papers into their backpacks, getting all crumbled, sticky, or even wet.
Solid binders, along with pencil pouches and folders inside, will help them stay organized and in turn keep them more accountable to being responsible for their work.
This project will help me eliminate the many excuses of what happened to their homework, planner or pencils. I know my students will be proud to turn in their work when they learn how much better life is when they are able to be organized!
