Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach kindergarten in a school that is located in one of the most densely populated poverty stricken areas of Los Angeles. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Almost all my students are English Learners and receive free meals. Many of them are being raised in single parent households with very little resources.
My students are energetic and smart.
Despite the many obstacles they face, their love of learning never diminishes. I have very little control of what happens outside my classroom but inside I can provide a learning environment where they can grow to their full potential.
My Project
I am a firm believer that organization is the key to successfully being effective in teaching and learning! My kinder class is in need of totes, shelves, and other tools that will help us organize our learning resources: math manipulatives, word tiles, and sight word cards, to name a few. For example, the trays will hold the high frequency words that can be placed on top of my students' tables where they will be readily available for them to learn or review. The trays will cut down on wasted time, having students get up and getting them from the shelves. They will provide easy access for them to review their words or sounds without interruptions or guidance from me. Having our learning resources well organized, my students will become more independent and have more autonomy over their own learning.
