This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have an inclusion class of 20 kindergarteners. 7 of them are Special Education students, and 10 are English Learners. I have a wide variety of levels and needs in my class, so this reality led me to wonder what I can do to better connect with them, while having rigorous learning expectations, and making learning a fun, global process. I came up with some ideas, but I will need your help!
I want to give my students the opportunity of having a welcoming environment where they want to return to every day, and where they feel they belong and are ready to learn.
A space that is appealing, and beautiful, a place where they feel safe and communication and interactions occur all the time.
By adding an extra table and rocking chairs for flexible seating, I want to empower my students to practice decision-making in a friendly environment, where they feel ownership of their own learning and can choose where to work, not having to stay at their desk all day. Not everybody learns the same way, and having choices will help me adapt to their needs. Also, giving the opportunity to interact with other classmates making meaningful connections
I want to create a classroom set up where materials and manipulatives are well-organized and labeled in bins, and are accessible to my students, so they can be independent by grabbing the bins, and putting them back; even making choices on what to use.
I would also like to have more hands-on activities and sensory materials that are fun, engaging and allow me to meet the different needs and levels that my students have. These materials promote creativity and outcomes in different ways, and students are not just repeating, but they are actively making connections and knowledge.
