This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic kids with a love of learning. At least 90% of them come from low-income households, with parents struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, these children still want to create, read, write, and learn!
My students are worried about food and shelter, but they are sheltering in place with basic classroom necessities that provide them with some normalcy, allowing them to participate in class online.
I am trying to meet their needs emotionally, as well as academically, during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn Language Art, Math, and Science.
My Project
When we return to school in the fall, I will have a new group of kindergartners, many of whom have never been to school. I need to make sure my children are safe and protected. Our families need to feel at ease when they drop off their children to school. These cubbies will be placed at each of the four tables in my classroom.
Each child will receive their own bin for school supplies that will be separate from the other children to keep them healthy.
Each bin will have its own lid, to keep their materials clean and sanitary. And these bins will have a designated place in the assigned cubby to prevent cross contamination.
Children will feel safe with their personal items, protected from germs. We want our children to learn to share, but first, we must protect their health and well-being. When children feel safe and loved, then the learning can begin.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
