My students are determined to succeed in life despite many obstacles in their way. Many are from low-income families in neighborhoods hit hard by changing economic times over the past decades. Despite facing challenges I can only imagine, single-parent households, teen parenthood, homelessness, drugs and crime in their neighborhoods, PTSD, immigration statuses, and language barriers to name a few. Nevertheless, they come to school and show their true quality! Some days, I learn more from them than they do from me.
My Project
The reading intervention method I will be teaching (for the first time this year) focuses on questioning texts and authors. A huge part of it is helping students to make their thinking visual. This program has consistently raised reading achievement 2.6 years in just a single semester. To foster that growth, I will need to have a new set of classroom resources including organizational shelving, color-coded paper, and markers to help represent students' thoughts, and large paper rolls for mapping text structures and patterns.
I believe literacy is a civil right and will help my students use these tools to gain skill and confidence as readers.
