Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every day I give thanks that i have the opportunity to work with so many curious and enthusiastic 6th grade students. This is my first year teaching reading to about 65 children at a school that serves a community with a higher than average rate of poverty and homelessness.
The children, that I often find myself referring to as " my kids" or "my little ducklings", come to school every day seeking stability, and a safe, caring learning environment.
Despite the daily struggles that many of my students face, I am greeted each morning with great, big smiles, positive attitudes, and an eagerness to learn. Every day I am inspired by the fortitude of my students and i feel that it is my duty as a teacher to teach with the same level of dedication and enthusiasm that my students bring to the classroom every single day. They inspire me to make a difference!
My Project
Currently we are using cardboard boxes as our library bookshelves. they seem to get the job done, however, they are wearing out and starting to crease with the weight of the books. The bookshelves would replace these boxes and provide more room for our classroom library to grow.
In addition, we are using the box lids as table organizers, which contain materials for each of the groups like pencils and library books.
Again, it gets the job done, however, the lids are starting to tear and wear out. They also take up majority of the table space, limiting the amount of space students have to work. The 4 drawer plastic containers would replace the box lids. Each group would have one of the 4 drawer plastic containers to keep folders, pencils, library books, and any other materials well organized.
