Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a loving, energetic group of at-risk students at an urban Title I school in the heart of Manhattan. Many of my students are English Language Learners, have special needs, or are Safety Transfer students who struggle because they have not had equal opportunities to gain the fundamental skills they need to be successful in high school.
Many of my students enter high school battling outside factors in their life, while struggling to find a purpose in an educational setting, and trying catch up to grade level in their mathematics skills.
My students usually enter my classroom at least three grade levels behind in their mathematics skills, but never let this challenge stop them from persevering and wanting to face the challenge.
This year, my students will be in a second-year algebra review course to prepare them further for their Algebra state exam. And although much of this course will have to be focused on test prep, I hope to work with these students to build a welcoming classroom community that fosters social-emotional growth as well as academic growth.
My Project
This project is to help fund the basic needs of our 10th grade geometry classroom. It has been shown repeatedly that the more systems there are in place, and the more organized students are, the more likely they are to succeed in any classroom. This project is designed to help set up these systems, make our classroom more comfortable, and allow our students to have access to the supplies they need without financial worry.
When students have equal opportunities and equal access to supplies, they are more likely to succeed in school and close the already prominent achievement gap my students face.
Without your help, many of my students would not be able to afford the basic supplies in this project on their own. This project is designed to supply each student with a binder to stay organized throughout the year, as well as enough index cards to make ongoing vocabulary flashcards to help them prepare for their standardized tests. This also includes the necessary hole punches, colored paper, and pencils to accompany this system and make the transition to organization as seamless as possible.
Last but not least, this project has thrown in printer ink to help students more easily use the class set of iPads we were gifted last year. This will assist students in our transition to Google Classroom by allowing them to gain online study skills, do practice problems, print out their missing work, and more.
With your help in fulfilling this project, you are helping to guarantee a group of students a successful academic year in a mathematics classroom. Thank you in advance for your assistance in making my students feel more confident and prepared to achieve their goals, and for making our school year run more smoothly!
