This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Coming from more than 20 countries, and speaking over a dozen languages, my group of students are a daily reminder how big and small the world really is. Through their varied educations, upbringings, and personal stories, they come together to learn English and science with me.

One concern students have, no matter their home country, is how to live healthy lives.

Just like adults, they're confused by the latest health trends, diets, and often misleading news about what is or isn't healthy. I want to empower them to cut through the clutter and make informed decisions about their and their family's health.

My Project

One of the toughest subjects to teach is anatomy and physiology. While we can use textbooks and even dissections to "see" how our bodies work, it's still difficult to build understanding of how all the parts come together, or how they are affected by disease. To help my students truly demonstrate their understanding, I'll ask them to channel their inner designer. We'll use t-shirts, hats, and other fabrics to design clothes and wearables that speak to the form and function of our organ systems.

STEM and the arts are two sides of the same coin: STEM informs us about the world around us, while the arts give it meaning.

As artists in this project, students will be challenged to communicate visually, in language, and with analogies about the systems they're representing. As scientists, they will research how the systems interact, work, and in the case of disease, sometimes don't work. When STEM and art come together, there are multiple ways both the artists and the audience engage with the work. Help us bring the basics of life, to life with STEM and the arts!
