Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach just over 500 students at least once a week for 50 minutes. Even though some may be shy, within minutes I have every student participating through singing, movement and instrument playing. I help make the music accessible to all my students.
There are so many different learning styles and accommodations to consider when you have hundreds of different students.
Many of my students do not speak English as their first language but that does not stop them from being engaged and trying their hardest in the music classroom. Many of my students come from low-income situations as well. I teach 21 classes of about 28 K-4 students and 2 autism classes. By the first month of school, I know everyone's name and am able to focus on creating fun, meaningful and musical experiences with them.
I believe that music is the universal language. My students are able to communicate without words. Everyone is able to be successful in my classroom and with your help they can create, dance and play even more!
My Project
These instruments will help fill out our classroom Orff ensemble. The Orff instruments are not only used to accompany our singing, they are also helpful in developing students fine motor skills. The xylophone bass bar will give depth to our class sound. It is also easy for younger children to play as it is only one bar and so there will be no confusion about what to play. The alto glockenspiels will add another melodic line to our ensemble. This will provide a challenge for the older kids who want their music to sound beautiful and interesting.
I love using instruments in an ensemble setting to help students hear and feel the benefits of working together.
The interpersonal relationships formed in music class are unlike those found in other school subjects. Lessons with these instruments show students the need for individual parts in making the whole sound full and beautiful. These instruments are easy to store and move because of their size making them accessible to all students.
