Ms. Farrand from Chicago IL is requesting other through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need an alto xylophone and xylophone mallets to play in general music for performing and composing music. The xylophone will be used in classroom music improvisations. Students will learn to improvise by playing rhythmic and melodic patterns on the instrument.

Think back to the joy you have seen on the face of a child when they have been playing an instrument such as the xylophone with a musical ensemble when they were composing and performing music. It is truly a transforming experience for children!
I teach general music to students in public elementary schools in preschool to grade 8 at 2 schools in Illinois.
The students are enthusiastic about learning music, as there is a focus on movement, singing, and classroom instruments in the primary grades. In the upper grades students learn about the elements of music through classroom instruments such as keyboards, ukulele, or guitar, depending on which instruments are owned by the school. Students at the school where these instruments will be used are predominantly Hispanic, with many students speaking both English and Spanish.
There is a need at both schools for Orff instruments, or xylophones. For this project I have requested one diatonic alto xylophone with mallets. This will be added to the small collection of Orff instruments which I have started to build with the assistance of Donors Choose contributors! With this xylophone, students in music classes grades K-5 will accompany singing and music activities by having a student play chordal accompaniment. Students will be able to compose music on this xylophone and other classroom instruments, and then perform the composition for the class. The xylophone will also be used in classroom music improvisations. Students will learn to improvise by playing rhythmic and melodic patterns on the instrument. Students will learn about elements of movement by dancing to songs played on the xylophone.
Your donation to this project will allow students to develop their improvisation, composition, and performance skills.
The creativity of my students will be cultivated, and the arts of music and movement will be naturally fused!
